Mr. Groves was born and raised in the Ohio Valley, receiving a B.A. in Music Education (emphasis in euphonium) from West Liberty University in West Liberty, WV. While at WLU he also studied piano, competing in the MTNA collegiate division, as well as performing on piano in the WLU Spring Honors Recital his senior year.
After beginning his teaching career in Ohio, Mr. Groves moved to Arizona. His most recently held position was director of bands at Willow Canyon High School from 2012 to 2017. At Willow Canyon, Mr. Groves directed the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensembles I and II, as well as the Wildcat Marching Band. His top ensembles regularly qualified for State Festival, the marching band making three State Championship showings during his tenure. Mr. Groves also had a notable number of students pass audition for Regional Concert Festival as well as State Concert Festival.
Mr. Groves is currently a graduate student at Northern Arizona University in Wind Conducting. He also serves as a graduate assistant, directing works for the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Collegiate Band, as well as working with the Lumberjack Marching Band. While being a full-time teacher, and most recently a full-time graduate student, Mr. Groves has taught private lessons for piano, brasses, and electric bass for the past 10 years.
