Tony Montecalvo began playing piano at the age of four, learning songs by ear. By age five, his parents decided to sign him up for piano lessons. He started playing trumpet at ten years old and has played both trumpet and piano ever since.
In high school, Tony played the solo chair in jazz band and joined his first R&B/Funk/Rock group. Following high school, he attended Green River Community College in Washington. There he played trumpet in the jazz band, as well as sang in the vocal jazz group. He later moved to Los Angeles where he continued to study trumpet for 5 years with one of the best instructors in the country: Claude Gordon. Claude sat on the NBC Studio Orchestra and was known as the king of brass. While studying with Claude, Tony played in several different bands including Blues, Classic Rock and a Latin group. He’s played night clubs, corporate functions and even private parties. Due to his background in piano, Tony was able to double on both keys and trumpet. He went on to study jazz piano and B-3 organ in order to strengthen his classic rock and blues chops.
Tony has been teaching trumpet and piano for many years. He currently plays in a local classic rock band and gig a couple times a month. He’s always believed that learning piano at an early age lays the groundwork to pursue any other instrument and style of music young students may be interested in.
